When the devastating floods of 2019 happened to our neighboring communities, Wills Transfer answered the call sending four employees to help fill sandbags at the Cumberland and Britannia flood zones.
Two employees from the Perth branch, Brody Rawding & Jearim Woodall along with two employees from the Ottawa branch, Chris Gerard & Luke Cross were the first of many who eagerly raised their hand to help during this bleak time. Wills Transfer Ottawa, also supported the Red Cross by lending storage space for many of their relief supplies.
Those who went to the Cumberland and Britannia flood zones said it was hard but rewarding work, and that the Red Cross was so generous with words of encouragement and meals throughout the day.
The Wills Ottawa volunteers wrote a response the following day to their Branch Manager, Grant Paynter and Warehouse Supervisor, Craig Mears;
“Good Morning Gentleman,
Luke and I wanted to thank you guys for giving us the opportunity to help at the Cumberland volunteer site yesterday. It was awesome and humbling to see so many people give up their time to help with the flood relief. Most people we spoke to weren’t affected themselves by the flooding but felt compelled to help in any way possible. There were people of all ages, including a couple of student class rooms on hand to assist. The moral was extremely high considering the circumstances.
My body is probably a little sorer today than Luke and Brody’s, but I don’t mind in the least. I couldn’t let the young bucks show me up! One of the volunteers we spoke to said they were averaging 19,000 sandbags per day on the weekend. She didn’t have the numbers yet for the weekdays, but she figured they would come in high. We can’t say enough good things about the organizers. I can only imagine how tired they must feel, but they always seemed genuinely happy whenever they would talk to us.
Thanks again,
Chris & Luke”
