Steps to Driver Safety & Compliance at Wills Transfer
Driver Application, Branch Screening Process
- Start Driver recruitment process
- Review resume’ for qualifications and previous experience
- Phone or virtual interview (approximately 1 hour) to verify:
- Driving history (current abstracts)
- Police records check
- Accidents, violations
- Hours of service knowledge
- Vehicle inspection knowledge
- Safety Observations & Job Motivation quality check
- Score/Grade Candidate on above criteria
Validation Process
- Discuss interview results with Branch Manager
- Schedule a one-to-one interview
- Conduct a pre-employment drug test and review results
- Complete and issue a written job offer
- Receive signed offer
Safety & Compliance Orientation Process
Head Office Orientation, Day #1
- ½ day with Driver Recruiter and ½ day with Health & Safety Manager
- Driver file completed with the following documentation:
- Pre-Employment drug testing results
- HOS (hours of service) training
- Vehicle Inspection training
- Load Security training
- ELD (electronic logging device) training
- Annual Review training
- TDG (transportation of dangerous goods) training
- WHMIS/ GHS (workplace hazardous material inspection sheets or global harmonized sheets) training
- Workplace Violence training
- SOP and Policy training
- Health & Safety workers training
- Hazard Recognition training
- Site-specific training
In Cab Training, Day #2.
- Driver Trainer is assigned to New Driver
- Driver in-cab training can range anywhere from 1 to 5 days
- Driver Trainer completes a New Driver evaluation package and provides aid in areas that need extra attention
- Driver Trainer completes a Road Test and reviews package with new Driver & the Driver Recruiter
- First days, New Driver has contact with Driver Recruiter to ensure safety compliance and on-the-road comfort is present
Annual Training & Review
- Driver Recruiter meets one-to-one with all Drivers
- Quarterly random drug and alcohol testing through Driver Check
- ISAAC, Weekly Speed Gauge Reports indicates how well driver is doing controlling speed. ISAAC Scorecard is provided for the previous month (driver score out of 100…target is 90%…proposals given on how to improve score if needed)
- Wills Transfer’s SOP and Policy reads along with any Federal Legislation additions or omissions
- CVOR accident/incident (Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration)
- COVID compliance
- Quarterly Driver abstract overview results:
- Hours of service
- Cargo securement
- Dangerous goods
- Mechanical issues
- CVSA inspection results (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance)
Annual Safe Driver Award Program
If a Driver meets or surpasses all criteria under Annual Training and Review, they are deemed to be a ‘Safe Driver’ and awarded a Safe Driving Pin. Each pin represents the number of consecutive years the Driver has met the outlined review requirements.
