World Mental Health Day
The pandemic and world events have and continue to take a toll on our mental health. However, October 10th is our chance to reconnect through World Mental Health Day. Today we can take the opportunity to renew our efforts to protect and improve our mental health.
Why improve our mental health? Because it is estimated that one in eight people live with a mental health disorder. However, growing social and economic differences, conflicts, and violence, are affecting all of us. But we can all play a part in increasing our awareness about good mental health.
To start with, let’s imagine a world in which mental health is valued, promoted, and protected. Next, is a world where everyone has an opportunity to enjoy good mental health. Finally, let’s make a world where everyone can access the mental healthcare they need.
Part of the Solution
Be part of the solution. Self-awareness and sensitivity towards mental health have changed things for the better. Why? Because our language surrounding mental health has improved. For instance, today words like “crazy”, and “lunatic” are now cringe-worthy. And we have come to understand that these words can be hurtful. But there is still more that needs to be done.
Educate yourself. Spend some time and research mental health subjects. It can provide you with the proper tools to better understand others.
Profile of Mental Health
Mental health represents our emotional, spiritual, and social well-being. It determines how we handle stress, relationships, and overall decision-making. Add to this, it also includes the realization of one’s potential. Additionally, our mental health determines our ability to have a balanced and enjoyable life.
Dark Side of Mental Health
In recent years, there has been an increased awareness of the importance good mental health plays. Especially since depression is one of the leading causes of disability today.
Poor mental health weakens and limits our ability to live a fulfilling life. To this, alarmingly suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. And sadly, people with severe mental health conditions typically die sooner than others.
In fact, today mental illness is more common than cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. So much so that by 2029, mental illness is expected to become the leading cause of disease worldwide.

Mental Health Fitness
Did you know that mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness? Keeping your brain and emotional health in tip-top shape is so important. In fact, striving for good mental fitness encourages us to regulate and maintain our emotional wellbeing. We can do this through friendship, positive social activities, mindfulness, and well-thought-out routines.
Ask for Help
If you can’t achieve good mental fitness on your own, ask for help. Seek professional or spiritual help through counseling. Counseling will build up your resilience to everyday challenges. It helps to decrease anxiety and depression. And above all, it helps us to cope with our feelings. As a result, we can navigate our way to emotional improvement.
And remember, don’t be ashamed of your story. It may inspire others!
