May is Healthy Vision Month. So, don’t lose sight of what matters to you, get an eye exam today!
Our eyes are an important part of our health; they work non-stop. In fact, much of our nonverbal communication comes from the way we listen and express ourselves through our eyes.
For this reason, taking care of your eyes needs to be a priority just like eating healthy and being physically active. And the best way to know if you’re eyes are in good health is with a comprehensive eye exam. It’s also the best way to find out if you need glasses or contacts.
So, if you haven’t had an eye exam for some time, schedule one this month. Your eyes will thank you!
Healthy Vision Month, ways to help protect your eyes
- Get regular comprehensive dilated eye exams to protect your vision. Okay, I mentioned this already but only a comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist will ensure your vision is in good health.
- Know your family’s eye health history. Why? Because some eye diseases or conditions are hereditary so knowing can be the best form of prevention and early detection.
- Eat right to protect your eyesight. Eat plenty of dark leafy greens and fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. And don’t forget those carrots. Loaded with vitamin A and beta carotene, carrots are rich in antioxidants that can help prevent eye damage caused by free radicals.
- Get plenty of rest. When you don’t get enough rest, your eyes get very dry, which can lead to irritation. Remember, your eyes work non-stop throughout the day so get your ZZs.
- Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses is an essential part of protecting your eyes from UV damage.
- Sunglasses are stylish but wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing yard work. They are the best defense against serious eye injuries.
- Regular eye exams can detect other serious health problems too. Many people first learn they have serious health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even cancer from a routine eye exam!
Also, research is advancing to develop an eye test to identify your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. This test may soon be performed during your comprehensive eye exam.
Our eyes are “the window to our soul.” It turns out, they are also a very effective window to our overall health.
For Healthy Vision Month, take care of your eyes to make them last a lifetime.
Don’t put it off, schedule an eye exam today.
Even if you think you have perfect vision, regular eye exams can be one of the best things you can do to protect the overall health and wellness of you and your eyes.
One final note about Healthy Vision Month.
At Wills Transfer, we are committed to promoting Healthy Vision Month this May. So much so, that we have partnered with the Athens Lions Club recycled eyeglasses program. Collecting used eyeglasses to offer the gift of sight to those in need. Check out our Facebook page later this month to see how many eyeglasses we collected!
